Performance Parameters

The Performance Parameters are:

Server Performance

Many factors influence the performance of a ZixGateway appliance:

Threading Policy

The threading policy can affect the throughput of messages in certain situations. Contact ZixCorp Customer Support at support@zixcorp.com for help with these values if you are experiencing throughput problems.

Initial Number of Threads

Optional, Defaulted

The Initial Number (#) of Threads per Destination parameter specifies the minimum number of threads to allocate when opening a connection to a destination. The default value is conservative. It guarantees that if the first message sent is a very large one, then the other messages waiting to be shipped to the destination can still make progress using the second thread. ZixCorp recommends that you initially accept the default entry. Consult with ZixCorp Customer Support at support@zixcorp.com before making these changes.

Maximum Number of Threads

Optional, Defaulted

The ZixGateway mail relay has a built-in policy for allocating more message transmission threads to a destination when a backlog of messages develops. ZixCorp recommends that you initially accept the default entry. Consult with ZixCorp Customer Support at support@zixcorp.com before making these changes.

Maximum Message Hold Time

Optional, Defaulted

The ZixGateway mail relay holds a message that is undeliverable because the destination is known but not currently accessible or accepting email.

Periodically, the mail relay will attempt to re-send the message. These attempts will continue until a fixed period of time after which the mail relay returns it to the sender as undeliverable. This parameter tells ZixGateway when to stop re-transmission attempts.

Note: If a TLS only policy is triggered and ZixGateway cannot establish an adequate TLS connection, the message will immediately bounce.

The default value for the Maximum Message Hold Time parameter is 1 day. Enter a different value in the box to change the default.

The value of this parameter is an integer number followed by the letter h (hours) or d (days). Examples: 1d for 1 day or 24h for 24 hours.

ZixCorp recommends that you do not set this value to less than 24 hours or greater than 7 days. These limits reflect pragmatic expectations about Internet and mail server reliability. A value between 1 and 5 days is generally accepted as reasonable.

Message Size Limit

Optional, Defaulted

Mail relays have limited storage space to hold messages. As a mail relay, ZixGateway has a storage limit.

You must carefully consider the size and frequency of large email messages that your organization sends and receives. The ZixGateway mail relay will reject any message that exceeds the size limit you set and return it with an appropriate bounce message to the sender.

ZixCorp recommends that you initially accept the default. You can then change this parameter according to the needs of your organization. The maximum value is 60 MB, but keep in mind all email systems add additional information to an email message during each send. The general rule is to add 1/3 to your message size to account for this overhead.

Poll your email users or review the email logs for a few months to determine whether to decrease or increase this value.
