ZixSelect is an optional feature of ZixGateway, installed on the end user’s Microsoft Outlook toolbar. For details, see ZixSelect for Microsoft Outlook Users available for download from the ZixCorp Customer Care.
ZixSelect provides users with the power to decide whether to send a message plaintext or encrypted. ZixSelect, along with Routing policies, provides a means to educate senders when email needs to be sent encrypted. ZixGateway still scans the subject, body, or attachments of ZixSelect messages before encrypting them.
ZixSelect has the following features:
ZixSelect Encrypt & Send
The Default Encrypt & Send Policy ensures that the email message
is encrypted and sent using ZixVPM, ZixMail or the ZixPort. However,
the matching criteria of another Encryption policy could match the email more closely. In that case, the email message
is encrypted and sent using the action of the more-specific policy. The
Encrypt & Send option must be selected
in the Send Options row for the policy
to match the email.
Additionally, if a user does not install ZixSelect, but sets their email message sensitivity to Confidential in Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007 or 2010, the Default Encrypt & Send Policy is triggered and the email message will be sent encrypted.
ZixSelect Send Unencrypted
The Default Send Unencrypted Policy sends the email plaintext if the
matching criteria of another Encryption policy does not match the email
more closely. The Send Unencrypted option
must be selected in the Send Options row
for the policy to match the email.
ZixCorp recommends that you do not create an Encryption policy that will allow the user to send HIPAA or GLBA information unencrypted using the ZixSelect buttons.
The Routing function allows you to return ZixSelect messages to the sender and send copies to a defined administrative mailbox. Options for routing the email include: send copy of original message, send notification only, or send text of message as an attachment to the notification.
System Administrators can customize the routing bounce message that accompanies an original message returned to the end user. For example, the custom bounce message might explain that the original message contains PHI or GLBA information and must be encrypted.
See Recommended Policies for the list of policies that you should create if ZixSelect has been installed.
