Defining the Sender and Recipient Patterns

The asterisk "*" can be used as the entire user ID (immediate left of the "@" sign) and/or as the most specific domain (immediate right of the "@" sign). Additionally, the Enable All Patterns check box is the same as entering *@* and allows the policy to apply to all patterns in the To and/or From field. The asterisk in sender/recipient patterns is a token wildcard, not a string wildcard. Therefore, you cannot use the asterisk to represent a portion of a user ID or domain.

Note: Entering *@* in the To or From field will be replaced with Enable All Patterns when you click Apply.

The valid examples below show the only valid positions for the asterisk, i.e., immediately preceding or following the "@" sign.

Examples of valid patterns

• Selecting Enable All Patterns or entering *@* in the To and From row matches any email address.
• Pattern “*@zixcustomer.com” matches any email user ID in the zixcustomer.com domain.
• Pattern “*@*.zixcustomer.com” matches any user ID in any sub-domain of the zixcustomer.com domain, including zixcustomer.com itself.
• You can also use a specific pattern, like “jsmith@zixcustomer.com.”

Examples of invalid patterns

• “dr*@*”, “*@big*.com”, “*esq@*”, “*@*hospital.org”
